Martinique Mims
Martinique Mims is a slam poet and children’s book author who writes while looking through the lens of history and the triumphs and challenges people face, especially communities of color and the transformative times we live in. Her past experiences have impressed her with the importance of giving youth and local artists a voice. Martinique believes that education and art have the power to transcend our circumstances. She uses the power of words to inspire change, uplift, and build community. Her goal is to uplift children through her stories and encourage them to be who they are and to realize they are somebody and shouldn’t think less. Through her fellows’ Unconventional Spaces project, Martinique is creating an art series in the community working with other local artists, and an art-inspired interactive food justice program for youth in her community. Martinique received her Bachelor’s in Communication and Business at Hiram College and served and worked as an AmeriCorps member and recruitment manager with City Year Cleveland for five years.
